| In
1996, I was attending a Heads' meeting and I overheard a comment being
made by Gord McCalla, the then Head of Computer Science who stated that
the number of women in computer science had declined from 40% of graduates
in 1980 to 15%. I felt strongly that the digital divide between women and
men would become a new mechanism of women's subordination, and that we, as
a university, could do something to "turn the tide". I contacted
Keith Taylor (Professor, Mathematics) who agreed to co-chair the Gender
and I.T. Advisory committee. |

We
pulled together a group of people who we knew had knowledge of or special
interest in I.T. from across campus. Once the Committee had decided to
host a one-day workshop for high school girls, we contacted the Saskatoon
Public and Catholic school boards who were very interested in the project,
and they became an integral part of the planning and delivery of the
workshop.
