Research Assistant Required for Indigenous knowledge in science education project

Graduate Research Assistant
Status: Casual (approx. 6 hours/week) up to May 2016 to a maximum of 192 hours.
Salary Information: Graduate Assistant rate of $18.51/hr.
Primary Purpose: To provide support and assistance for a research project entitled: The impact of Indigenous knowledge in science education on urban Aboriginal students' engagement and attitudes toward science: A pilot study.
Nature of Work: This research is being conducted in partnership with Saskatoon Public Schools, the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc., and Whitecap Dakota First Nation, and is a pilot project examining the impact of respectfully including Indigenous knowledge in science education on Aboriginal students' engagement and attitudes toward science. In collaboration with the research partners, two teachers will be chosen and paired with a local Elder or Knowledge Keeper to develop and deliver a science unit which is respectful of Indigenous knowledge (e.g., in content, pedagogy, assessment, etc.). Pre and post surveys will be done with students, and a few will be selected for follow up interviews. Results will be disseminated at a community event that will also showcase the students' work.
Accountabilities:
The primary responsibilities (training provided where necessary) of the GRA will be to:

• Locate and review literature on student engagement in science education and attitudes toward science
• Assist with community events (information and dissemination sessions)
• Assist with design of research tools (student surveys (pre and post), interview questions)
• Work collaboratively to analyze data and write up results
• Participate in writing for publication and conference presentations

Eligibility: Enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Saskatchewan for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Qualifications and Experience: Research experience in Education, Native Studies, or a related discipline is an asset. Experience working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers an asset


Skills: Effective communication skills (written and verbal); Strong interpersonal skills, including intercultural and anti-oppressive lenses; Ability to take initiative and work independently.
