Athletics and Recreation

All students are encouraged to participate in activity and sports programs. The College of Kinesiology offers a variety of programs for all University students. Detailed information on these programs is available from the Campus Recreation Office, in the new Physical Activity Complex at 87 Campus Drive.

The intramural program is under a men's recreation board and a women's recreation board in conjunction with a recreation director who is responsible to the two boards, as well as to the College of Kinesiology. The main objective of the program is to provide every student in the University with the opportunity to participate in some form of competitive or non-competitive recreational activity on and off campus. Combine this opportunity with the goals of maximum participation, sportsmanship, friendship, fellowship and enjoyment at all levels of skill, and one has an appreciation of the structure and function of this program.

There are a number of men's, women's and co-rec activities in the form of leagues, tournaments, special events or individual pursuits. The activity list includes: a canoe race, football, soccer, curling, hockey, basketball, badminton, floor hockey, volleyball, kayaking, broomball, weightlifting, slo-pitch, scuba diving, innertube water polo, 5 km race, downhill ski/snowboard night, mini-golf, 9-hole golf, racquetball, squash, tennis and rec pack, an individually directed physical activity program. In addition, there are clubs such as karate, yoga, kayaking, triathalon, and figure skating. Learn-to clinics are offered for students interested in increasing their knowledge of various sports and activities.

Students at the University of Saskatchewan that have paid the Recreation fee will obtain access to the new Physical Activity Complex for no additional charge.  The Physical Activity Complex includes a 14,000 square foot Campus Fit Centre, four Racquetball / Squash / Walleyball courts, a 40 foot 6 route climbing wall (equipment and instruction provided), a 200 meter walk / jog track, day locker access and towel service and other opportunities such as full access to drop –in fitness classes (yoga, aerobics, step aerobics, muscle sculpting, spinning, etc.).
Huskie Athletics is the interuniversity athletic program provided for students from all colleges at the University of Saskatchewan. The College of Kinesiology administers this elite athletic program from the Williams Building until the completion of the new home of the College and Huskie Athletics, the Physical Activity Complex, which opens in September 2003. For more information about Huskie Athletics, Tel: 306-966-6500 or visit our website at: www.huskies.usask.ca

Huskie Athletic teams compete in the Canada West Conference, which includes twelve universities in the four western provinces of Canada. Teams compete for the opportunity to participate in National Championships hosted by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

The Huskie Athletics program offers 15 CIS teams. These include football for men and men's and women's basketball, cross country, hockey, soccer, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. Student athletes may compete for a maximum of five years if they are in good academic standing as a full time student. Potential student athletes should consult the Awards Guides, available online, for possible opportunities regarding scholarships and athletic financial awards.

All Huskie Athletic teams conduct open tryouts for University of Saskatchewan students. All students are encouraged to participate in Huskie Athletics as an athlete, manager, trainer, minor official, administrative assistant or fan. Many of these are paid positions.

University of Saskatchewan students with a valid student card are admitted FREE of charge to all home Huskie Athletic league games.
