Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services

The University of Saskatchewan's Mission Statement affirms its commitment to provide an environment, which promotes equal opportunity, dignity and the development of all individuals. Discrimination and harassment undermine the University's Mission Statement and violate the rights, dignity, and integrity of individuals and groups of individuals.

The University does not condone discrimination or harassment. It is committed to preventing and eliminating discriminatory conduct and practices by providing educational programs and implementing prompt corrective action. The University is also committed to making every reasonable effort to ensure that no student or employee is subjected to harassment and will take corrective action respecting any incidents of harassment that occur.

The University's Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Policy prohibits discrimination and harassment as they are defined in the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. This Policy also prohibits personal harassment, which is not included under the legislation.

Under Human Rights Legislation, discrimination is an act, behaviour, or practice, which may be intentional or unintentional. It has the purpose of effect of imposing burdens, obligations, disadvantages, or preferences on a person, or class of persons who are identified by a prohibited ground, which are not imposed on others.  Prohibited grounds include: religion, creed, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, colour, ancestry, nationality, place of origin, race or perceived race, and receipt of public assistance.

If you feel you are being discriminated against or harassed you should:

1.  Say No:  Let the offending party know that his or her behaviour is unwelcome and you want it to stop.

2. Seek Help:  If communicating your concerns directly to the offending party is not an option, or has not been successful, seek help.  Contact the Co-ordinator of Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services for a confidential consultation, or seek assistance from another resource such as the University of Saskatchewan Students' Union, or Student Enrolment Services.

Services are available to all students and employees and include:

  • confidential consultation,
  • information and advice on the options available to resolve a problem,
  • assistance with resolution, and
  • workshops and presentations of discrimination and harassment.
