Land and Facilities
The University of Saskatchewan is situated on the South Saskatchewan River within the city of Saskatoon. This valuable asset is comprised of: over 400,000 square meters (60) academic core buildings, 766 hectares of land, 313 hectares of serviced academic core land; 24 kilometers of roads and walks; 54 kilometers of water and sewer lines; 18 kilometers of steam lines; and 20 kilometers of electrical lines. The University of Saskatchewan has a daily population of approximately 30,000 people and has utilities and telephone usage similar to a city the size of North Battleford. The University of Saskatchewan produces enough steam energy in a year to melt 160 acres of ice 4 meters (13 feet) deep. It produces enough air conditioning energy to make a block of ice 65 meters (215 feet) on each side. All physical planning and operations are strategically designed to maximize asset life cycle and minimize life-cycle costs and to provide a safe and reliable physical environment to support and protect learning and research in an effective and efficient manner.
The University has finalized the Campus Core Area Master Plan (E-mail CAM@US). The Campus Master Plan establishes the physical framework for growth of new areas and enhancement of existing areas of the University of Saskatchewan campus. The plan is based on an evaluation of issues including space and growth needs, strategic priorities, building and landscape design, sustainable development, transportation and parking. The vision for the Campus places equal weight on the quality of outdoor spaces as it does on its architectural character, with the objective of creating a safe, active and beautiful campus that projects an image befitting the University of Saskatchewan.
As you travel the campus you will see capital construction sites that reflect the mission of Facilities Management Division at the University of Saskatchewan to enrich the physical environment of the campus. Some examples are the 1924 Wing at the Thorvaldson Building and the Stadium Parkade site. In addition there are significant projects underway to improve the facilities on campus such as renovations to the College Building, improvements to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, and planning for innovative new residence facilities.
