Students registered in any of the language courses (114, 117, 214, 217, 314, 317) should plan to attend weekly oral tutorials as scheduled in the Registration Guide. A multi-media laboratory is also available on a library basis.

Students with a background in Russian (including those who speak the language at home) are not permitted to take certain Russian language courses. Full details on restrictions are noted with the Russian course descriptions in the Course Catalogue section of the Calendar.


UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE COURSES
RUSS 114.3 (Formerly 115)
Elementary Russian I
1/2(3L-1T)

Develops elementary proficiency in speaking, reading, understanding, and writing Russian. Basic grammatical structures, sound patterns, spelling and vocabulary will be studied. Students will be introduced to Russian life and culture, politics, geography, and society.

Note: Students who have completed Russian 20 (Grade 11 Russian) or have completed Russian 30 (Grade 12 Russian), may not take this course for credit. Students who have some background in Russian or who have taken any other courses in Russian and native speakers of Russian are not allowed to register in this course. Students with credit for RUSS 115 may not take this course for credit.

RUSS 117.3 (Formerly 115)
Elementary Russian II
1/2(3L-1T)
Prerequisite(s): RUSS 114 or equivalent background.

A continuation of RUSS 114. It develops elementary proficiency in speaking, reading, understanding, and writing Russian. Basic grammatical structures, sound patterns, spelling and vocabulary will be studied. Students will be introduced to Russian life and culture, politics, geography, and society. Students will develop the ability to understand spoken Russian and respond to it within certain everyday topics.

Note: Students who have completed Russian 30 may not take this course for credit. Students who have a background in Russian or have taken any other Russian courses, must present themselves to the Department. Native speakers of Russian are not allowed to register in this course. Students with credit for RUSS 115 may not take this course for credit.

RUSS 210.3
Russian Civilization in English
1/2(3L)
Prerequisite(s): Completion of 30 credit units at the university.

A survey of the material, spiritual and intellectual culture of Russia.

Note: This course cannot be used to fulfill the language requirement. It may be used to fulfill the humanities requirements or as an elective under Requirement 7.

RUSS 214.3 (Formerly 215)
Intermediate Russian I

Prerequisite(s): RUSS 114 and 117 or equivalent background.

Develops the basic syntactic, morphological, lexical, and phonetic structure of modern Russian, by combining a study of the essentials of grammar with classroom practice in conversation and translation, and through selected readings.

Note: Native speakers of Russian are not allowed to register in this course. Students with credit for RUSS 215 may not take this course for credit.

RUSS 216.3
Russian Prose

Prerequisite(s): RUSS 214, 217.

A survey of Russian prose from the beginnings to the present.

RUSS 217.3 (Formerly 215)
Intermediate Russian II
1/2(3L-1T)
Prerequisite(s): RUSS 214 or equivalent background.

A continuation of RUSS 214. Emphasis is placed on improving oral and written communication skills. Selected readings will be used to further develop the essentials of grammar and build vocabulary.

Note: Native speakers of Russian are not allowed to register in this course. Students with credit for RUSS 215 may not take this course for credit. This course is also offered as part of the St. Petersburg Russian Term Abroad Program.

Russian Drama and Theatre

Prerequisite(s): RUSS 214

A reading and analysis of the Russian 19th and 20th century drama and the emergence of the major professional theatres of Moscow and St. Petersburg, with reinforcement of grammatical concepts through the study of these texts. This course studies the work of some of the major theatre directors, such as: Stanislavsky, Nemirovich-Danchenko, Meyerkhold, Tovstonogov, Tabakov, Liubimov. Course language: Russian.

The development of Russian poetry from its beginnings to the present. Works of representative poets in each period are studied.

Dostoyevsky and the Russian Idea

Prerequisite(s): RUSS 117; ENG 110; LIT 100

A reading and analysis of Dostoyevsky’s political novels: Notes from the Underground, Crime and Punishment, Demons, Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, in the context of independent Russian thinking of the time (Solovyov, Khomyakov, Berdyeve, Gogol, Tolstoy). Course language: English.

Note: Students with credit for RUSS 334, may not take this course for credit.
