Website: www.stmcollege.ca St. Thomas More College (STM) was established, in 1936, upon the invitation of the President of the University of Saskatchewan to the Catholic Bishop of Saskatoon. The Basilian Fathers, a religious congregation who pioneered the operation of Catholic colleges within universities throughout Canada, were invited to institute and operate the College—and they did. The College was incorporated by an Act of the Legislature of Saskatchewan in 1943, following formal approval by the Senate and Board of Governors of the University. (The Act was amended in 1972 and 2001.)
STM is the only federated college at the U of S; hence, it is administratively and financially autonomous from the University—that is, it receives its own provincial grants and is accountable to the Provincial Government—but it is academically integrated within the University. So, it offers university classes in the following departments: Archaeology, Economics, English, Languages & Linguistics, History, Philosophy, Political Studies, Psychology, Religious Studies and Anthropology, and Sociology. All STM classes are taught by STM faculty, who are members of the faculty of the College of Arts & Science and of University Council.
Any student, in any discipline and in any college on campus, may take STM classes, which are held on the U of S campus. STM classes are denoted by an “M” in their class section numbers, such as ENG 110.6 M61 or ECON 111.3 M02. STM classes will work towards the student’s program requirements, and ultimately, the student’s University of Saskatchewan degree.

Any on campus, full- or part-time student, in any discipline or pre-professional program within the College of Arts & Science, may enroll through STM through PAWS. (A first-year student would do this when he or she registers for classes for the first time.) STM students—who are still U of S Arts & Science students—pay no extra fees, and have no additional requirements to fulfill. They do not, for example, have to take any STM classes, nor do they have to be Catholic or of any religious affiliation. (While STM and its campus ministry team provide opportunities—such as counselling and liturgical and community activities—to explore and live out Christian values, no obligations are imposed in this area.)
Basically, STM offers its students more options and benefits. STM students are, for example: - Part of a small, welcoming community, and home to a newly renovated facility (that is across from Place Riel, the main student centre on campus).
- Invited to become involved in the STM Students’ Union, which is STM’s student government.
- Welcome to apply for STM scholarships and bursaries.
STM also maintains a co-ed student residence, Ogle Hall, for approximately 50 students.
The Lesya Ukrainka Chair provides for the position of Director of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage, and ultimately, for the study of Ukrainian history, culture, and civilization, with an emphasis on the experiences of Ukrainian people in the Canadian Prairies. The Chair is a gift of Dr. Victor Buyniak, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, and is named after poetess, playwright, literary critic, and essayist Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913). In the fall of 1976, a statue of Lesya Ukrainka, created by the famous Ukrainian sculptor Halyna Kalchenko (1926-1975), was unveiled in front of the Arts Building on the University of Saskatchewan campus. Dr. Buyniak was Head of the Department of Slavic Studies at the time of the dedication of the Lesya Ukrainka statue and spoke at the ceremony.
