St. Thomas More College is the only Federated College at the University of Saskatchewan. The College was established by the Basilian Fathers in 1936, on the invitation of the President of the University of Saskatchewan to the Catholic Bishop of Saskatoon. The Basilian Fathers, a religious congregation with headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, who pioneered the operation of Catholic colleges associated with non-denominational universities throughout Canada, were invited to institute and operate the College. The College was incorporated by an Act of the Legislature of Saskatchewan in 1943, following formal approval by the Senate and Board of Governors of the University. The Act was amended in 1972 and 2001. The College is administratively and financially autonomous from the University. It receives direct provincial grants and is accountable to the Provincial Government.

St. Thomas More is academically integrated within the University of Saskatchewan and shares in the University’s mandate and mission of post-secondary education. The College’s students receive University of Saskatchewan degrees as STM does not grant degrees. The College cooperates with the College of Arts & Science in preparing students for all B.A. and B.Sc. degrees, as well as the B.F.A. and B.Mus. degrees. Students in the College of Arts & Science may enroll through St. Thomas More College. Admission requirements are the same for both STM and the College of Arts & Science. The fees are also the same, and are paid to the University. Students in non-direct entry programs (for architecture, dentistry, law, medicine, nutrition and dietetics, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, social work, theology, or veterinary medicine) and part-time students may also enroll in STM. Enrolment in STM does not restrict choice of program or courses and students may enroll even if none of their classes in a given year are taught by the College. The College provides opportunities to explore and to live Christian values but imposes no obligation in this area.

The College faculty are members of the faculty of the College of Arts & Science and of University Council. Faculty appointments and promotion require the approval of the University to ensure that St. Thomas More classes are equivalent in standards to other university classes.

The College at present offers classes in these departments of Arts & Science: Archaeology, Economics, English, Languages & Linguistics, History, Philosophy, Political Studies, Psychology, Religious Studies and Anthropology, and Sociology. These have the same number as those offered by the corresponding department of the College of Arts & Science. St. Thomas More College classes are indicated in the Registration Guide by an M in the section number. The following is a list of Arts & Science courses in which St. Thomas More College regularly offers classes:
Students in colleges other than Arts & Science may take classes from St. Thomas More College as required courses or electives.

Students at St. Thomas More College have their own Students' Union, which arranges for cultural and social activities, sports, and student politics. It is represented on the Students' Representative Council of the University Students' Union.

STM shares classroom space with the University. The College has its own offices for faculty and for student society executives, library, chapel, seminar and classrooms, cafeteria, art gallery and common rooms for faculty and students.

In addition, campus ministers provide counselling and spiritual guidance and coordinate liturgical and community activities of the College. The campus ministers also, through the Newman Centre at the College, are available to all faculty, staff, and students at the University.

The College maintains a co-ed student residence, Ogle Hall, for approximately 50 students.

The Lesya Ukrainka Chair provides for the position of Director of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage. Through the scholarly research and community relationships of the Prairie Centre, the Chair promotes the study of Ukrainian history, culture, and civilization, with an emphasis on the experiences of Ukrainian people in the Canadian Prairies. The Chair is named after the outstanding Ukrainian woman of letters, Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913), poetess, playwright, literary critic, and essayist. In Fall 1976, a statue of Lesya Ukrainka, created by the famous Ukrainian sculptor Halyna Kalchenko (1926-1975), was unveiled in front of the Arts Building on the University of Saskatchewan campus. The Lesya Ukrainka Chair is a gift of Dr. Victor Buyniak, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Languages and Linguistics.
