The University of Saskatchewan Students' Union (USSU)
All full-time, part-time, certificate and distance learning undergraduate students of the University of Saskatchewan are members of the University of Saskatchewan Students' Union. For 2006-2007 full-time students paid $50.96 and part-time, certificate and distance learning students paid $25.48 to help fund the organization's advocacy and services. Founded in 1909, the Students' Union exists to represent, serve and support the academic and non-academic needs of the undergraduate students of the University of Saskatchewan through accountable, dynamic and unified leadership. We are a non-profit organization governed by an elected five-member Executive committee and 27 member University Students’ Council. The USSU President is the official liaison to the University's senior administration and governing bodies, as well as other student organizations. The President also oversees all the activities of the Students' Union and deals with student loan issues. The Vice-President (Academic Affairs) is the liaison with the University offices and departments directly responsible for the academic element of the University and assists students with academic grievances through the Academic Advocacy Office. The VP (Student Issues) focuses on the services which impact on the non-academic lives of students such as parking, transit, health and housing. The Vice-President (Operations and Finance) is responsible for overseeing the operations and finances of the Students' Union and its services, including: Place Riel Student Centre; Louis' Bar & Restaurant; Childcare Centre; and Browsers Used Bookstore and internet café; and Copy Central. The Vice-President (External Affairs) is responsible for liaising with federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as organizing lobby campaigns for the year. Through the diversity of these portfolios, the USSU has established many services to help students meet the challenges of student life. Academic Advocacy - If you believe you have been treated unfairly in a class, the Academic Advocacy Office in Lower Place Riel can help you get your grievance heard through the proper channels. Peer Support, Volunteer Opportunities - The USSU Help Centre, Victim Advocate, Lesbian Gay, Bisexual Transgender and Ally Centre, and the Women's Centre are excellent resources on campus for peer support or volunteer opportunities. The USSU also operation a campus food centre to assist those require emergency food hampers. Health & Dental - To help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the USSU provides a Health & Dental Plan. The cost of the Plan is included in your student fees, as a member of USSU.
