Standards of Academic Performance (M.P.T.)
1. Academic Standards
a. Grades required to pass a graduate class are 60%.
b. A cumulative overall average of 70% is required to continue in the program and to pass a promotion point.
2. Monitoring Academic Progress
a. Academic progress will be monitored by the student’s advisor and by the Director of the School of Physical Therapy.
b. If at any time progress is unsatisfactory, the Director will report to the School of Physical Therapy Academic Affairs Committee who will consider and recommend appropriate consequences.
c. The Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research will be notified and consulted in determining the consequences of unsatisfactory progress.
3. Promotion and Graduation
a. Faculty Council of the School of Physical Therapy will review recommendations from the School of Physical Therapy Academic Affairs Committee and make recommendations to the College of Graduate Studies and Research regarding promotion and graduation.
4. Promotion Points
a. End of Module II
b. End of Module VIII
c. End of Module X
5. Options to be Considered to Deal with Unsatisfactory Performance
a. The options which could be considered include supplemental examination, requirement to repeat the last module, requirement to discontinue.
b. As the M.P.T. program schedule may not allow sufficient time for repeating academic courses or undertaking remedial work within an academic module, a student who fails a course or fails to meet any of the standards of performance may be required to discontinue all studies at the School for one academic year, and if later readmitted, repeat the Module in which academic studies were discontinued.
c. Remediation - Any remediation will be considered within the context of the student’s entire program.
Standards of Academic Performance [B.Sc. (P.T.)]
1. In order to be promoted, a student must have passed all courses included in the curriculum for the year, with a Sessional Weighted Average of 60%, and achieve a grade of Satisfactory (60%) or better in all the Physical Therapy courses that are graded on other than a pass/fail basis.
2. In order to be eligible for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, a student must have passed all required courses in the program, have achieved a Cumulative Weighted Average of at least 60% in each year of the program, and have received a grade of Satisfactory (60%) or better in all the Physical Therapy courses in the program that are graded on other than a pass/fail basis.
3. The degree will be awarded with Distinction to a student who attains a minimum of 80% Cumulative Weighted Average
and has passed all clinical rotations. The degree will be awarded with Great Distinction to a student who attains a minimum of 85% Cumulative Weighted Average
and has passed all clinical rotations.
4. The requirements of the three clinical education courses must be successfully completed in the correct sequence, i.e. PTH 276, 378, 462. Since the program schedule does not allow time for repeating clinical courses or undertaking remedial work, if such actions are required, the time normally allocated for PTH 378 will firstly be used for completing a deficiency in PTH 276. Any remaining placements required for PTH 378 will be completed in the time allocated for PTH 462. Any placements consequently remaining for PTH 462 will be completed in the summer following the completion of the final regular academic year courses.
5. The grading of the clinical education courses, PTH 276, 378 and 462 will be Pass or Fail.
6. A student who receives a grade of Fail in PTH 276 will be required to repeat the course.
7. A student will usually be required to complete a minimum of one placement of remedial work if, in either PTH 378 or 462, there is a failure in one placement.
8. A student will usually be required to repeat PTH 378 or 462 if, in either course, one of the following circumstances applies:
- failure in two or more placements, or
- failure in a placement after a period of remedial work.
9. Under normal circumstances, a student who receives a grade of Fail after repeating either PTH 378 or 462, or who receives a grade of Fail in PTH 462 after having to repeat PTH 378, will be
Required to Discontinue.
10. An action appropriate to the degree of failure will be required of a student who, at the end of any year, fails to meet any of the standards of performance (i.e., pass all courses and attain a Sessional Weighted Average of at least 60%). Possible actions include requirements to:
- repeat the failed course(s) or, if a supplemental examination privilege is granted, pass that examination, or
- repeat the work taken during the year, or
- discontinue all studies at the School for one year, and if later readmitted, repeat the work taken in the year when academic studies were discontinued.
11. Except by special permission of the Faculty, no student will be permitted to register for the full program of studies in any session who has not completed, in full, the requirements of previous sessions.
12. A student may be
Required to Discontinue the Physical Therapy program for non-academic reasons such as health.
